Overview
The Japanese naval development program called for the construction of cruisers with a displacement of 10,000 tons. The final design differed from the original specifications in several ways: by eliminating half of the torpedo tubes, the number of main battery turrets was increased to five, and anti-torpedo protection was enhanced with longitudinal bulkheads. The thickness of the armor belt was increased, and anti-aircraft defense was strengthened. Myōkō was built in Yokosuka. From 1933 to 1935, the cruiser underwent modernization. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the ship participated in the landing on Hainan Island. During World War II, the cruiser fought in the Java Sea and Coral Sea, at Midway and the Solomon Islands, in the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf, where it sustained a torpedo hit. From February 1945, the ship served as a floating anti-aircraft battery in Singapore. The cruiser Myōkō surrendered to the British Royal Navy in September 1945 and was scuttled in the Strait of Malacca in July of the following year.
