Overview
Maya, a Takao-class cruiser, was built at the Kawasaki shipyard in Kobe. Upon commissioning, the ship was assigned to the 4th Cruiser Division. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the cruiser escorted transport vessels. During World War II, the Maya supported landings in the Philippines and the Aleutian Islands, and participated in the battles of the Eastern Solomons, the Santa Cruz Islands, and the Komandorski Islands in 1942–43. In 1943, the ship underwent a refit during which it lost one of its main battery turrets and its aircraft hangar—these were replaced with anti-aircraft guns. In 1944, the cruiser fought in the Philippine Sea and in Leyte Gulf. The cruiser Maya was torpedoed by the submarine USS Dace on October 23, 1944, and subsequently sank rapidly.
