Overview
The successful use of aircraft carriers in the British fleet sparked great interest in the fleets of other countries, including the American fleet. In 1920–22, the fleet's coal transport USS Jupiter of the Proteus type was converted into an aircraft carrier, receiving the name USS Langley. The aircraft carrier was used for technology development and training of naval aviation pilots. In 1936–37, the ship was converted into an aircraft transport, losing a third of its flight deck. During the Second World War, Langley took part in operations in the Pacific, transporting US Army Air Forces aircraft. The former aircraft carrier was heavily damaged by Japanese aircraft off Chila-cap on February 27, 1942, after which it was scuttled by its escort ships.
