Overview
HMS Indomitable, the fourth ship of the Illustrious class, was an attempt to address the problem of the small number of aircraft: the hangar was expanded by an additional 'half-hangar', allowing it to carry 48 aircraft, but leading to a reduction in armor thickness. The carrier's distinctive feature was its aerodynamic shape. The carrier participated in the Allied landings in Madagascar and Operation Pedestal. After the war, Indomitable replaced the battleship Vanguard as the flagship of the Home Fleet.
