Overview
Between 1932 and 1934, various projects were being considered to further develop and enhance the capabilities of the Deutschland-class warships. A decision was made to add a third main battery turret, leading to a significant increase in water displacement. When the characteristics of French battlecruiser Strasbourg became known, adjustments had to be made to the caliber of the ships' main armament. The 305Ā mm caliber version was deemed the most balanced one, especially since the British wanted to propose it as the main caliber at a forthcoming naval conference.
