Overview

The Sakura-class destroyers were designed based on the Umikaze-class ships. Unlike their predecessors, the new destroyers were equipped with steam engines rather than turbines. Ships of this class became the first destroyers fully designed in Japan, as well as the most modern ships of this type in the Imperial Navy at the start of World War I. In the West, the Sakura-class destroyers became a symbol of the success of Japanese shipbuilding, leading France to order twelve Arabe-class destroyers from Japan. Tachibana, a Sakura-class destroyer, was built in Maizuru. From 1919 to 1925, the ship was engaged in patrolling the Chinese coast. In April 1932, the destroyer was placed in reserve, and in 1936, it was finally decommissioned.
