Overview
USS Marblehead, an Omaha-class cruiser, began World War II as part of the Asiatic Fleet. During the Battle of the Makassar Strait, the ship was damaged in the steering gear. Controlled only by the engines, the cruiser managed to reach South Africa, from where it made its way to Brooklyn. In 1942–44, the ship served in the South Atlantic, and in the summer of 1944 escorted convoys. Later, it moved to Europe, where it participated in the landings in southern France.
