Overview
At the beginning of August 1937, the command of the Soviet fleet presented an updated plan for the construction of combat ships, which included light cruisers of a new type. The project received the index 68, and its development was carried out by TsKB-17. A total of 26 Project 68 cruisers were planned to be built in 1938-47. Due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, none of the seven ships laid down by that time were completed. Two cruisers under construction in Nikolaev were blown up by the Germans during their retreat, and the remaining ships were completed according to the adjusted Project 68K.
