Overview

SMS Emden, the second cruiser of the Dresden type, was built in Danzig. It spent almost its entire pre-war career in the Far East, where it met the start of World War I as part of Maximilian von Spee's squadron. In September 1914, the ship was sent to the Indian Ocean under the command of Captain Karl von Müller. After capturing two dozen ships in two months, Emden, in a surprise attack in the port of Penang, sank the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet. In November 1914, during a raid on the Cocos Islands, Emden was intercepted by the Australian cruiser Sydney. After a short battle, Emden sustained heavy damage and ran aground on a coastal reef. The remains of the cruiser were located near the coast of the Cocos Islands until the 1950s.
