Overview
After the war against Russia, Japan began developing light cruisers. The foundation was the ship Tone, laid down in 1905, which adopted the "clipper" hull design from Russian auxiliary cruisers. The project was also influenced by British Town-class ships. For the first time on a Japanese cruiser, turbines were used. Chikuma was built in Sasebo. During World War I, the ship pursued the squadron of Admiral Maximilian von Spee and the cruiser Emden. After the war, Chikuma patrolled the coast of China, and from 1924 served as a training ship for the Yokosuka Naval District.
