Overview
Large diesel-electric submarines of Project 641 were created to replace the submarines of Project 611, being their development. The new type was intended for operations on enemy communications, reconnaissance, and mine-laying. Project 641 was one of the last to have a classic hull type—subsequent submarines already had teardrop-shaped hulls. B-4 was built in Leningrad and transferred via internal waterways to Severodvinsk, where it entered service. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the submarine participated in Operation 'Kama'—the breakthrough to Cuba. B-4 became the only submarine that the American blockade forces could not force to surface. In 1963, B-4 received the honorary name 'Chelyabinsky Komsomolets.' In 1966, the submarine was in Egypt, where Soviet forces were present to prevent further escalation of the Egyptian-Israeli conflict. In the 1960s-80s, B-4 performed combat and training tasks in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea.
