Overview
A Brooklyn-class light cruiser commissioned into the U.S. Navy in 1938. USS Honolulu survived the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and actively participated in the Pacific War. Her combat record comprised several major battles, including the Battles of Tassafaronga, Kula Gulf, and Kolombangara. During the latter battle, Honolulu helped to sink several enemy ships but suffered severe damage herself—a Japanese torpedo tore off the ship's bow. After repairs, the cruiser participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where she was torpedoed again, and she remained under repair until the end of the war.
