Overview
The first large aircraft carrier of the Imperial Japanese Navy. To comply with the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty, the ship was originally laid down as an Amagi-class battlecruiser, but she was eventually completed to a reworked design as an aircraft carrier. As the flagship of the famous First Air Fleet, she played a key role in the Japanese Navy's successes during the initial stages of the Pacific War. In June 1942, Akagi was sunk by a U.S. carrier-based aircraft during the Battle of Midway.
