The USS New Jersey, the second Iowa-class battleship, was built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. After completing its shakedown, the ship was transferred to the Pacific Ocean, where it participated in the battles for Kwajalein and Eniwetok. Throughout 1944, the New Jersey took part in the invasion of New Guinea, the landings on the Mariana Islands, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Becoming the flagship of Third Fleet commander Admiral William Halsey, the battleship participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In the spring of 1945, the New Jersey took part in the Okinawa landings. The battleship earned nine battle stars for World War II, four for the Korean War, three for the Vietnam War, and another three for operations in Lebanon and the Persian Gulf. Thus, the New Jersey became the most decorated battleship in U.S. Navy history. In 2000, the battleship became a museum ship in Camden, New Jersey.
