Prinz Eugen, the third cruiser of the Admiral Hipper class, was built to a slightly modified design in Kiel. In May 1941, together with the battleship Bismarck, the ship sailed into the North Sea. The cruiser participated in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, where the British battleship HMS Hood was lost. Prinz Eugen broke away from the British pursuit and managed to reach Brest. In February 1942, the cruiser, together with the battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, broke through the English Channel, after which it was hit by a torpedo from the British submarine HMS Trident. After repairs, the cruiser was used as a training ship in the Baltic and then returned to service, supporting German troops in the Baltic states. In May 1945, in Copenhagen, Prinz Eugen surrendered to the British fleet. After World War II, the ship was transferred to the USA and then participated in nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. In August 1946, the former cruiser was decommissioned, and in December, it sank near Kwajalein Atoll.
